Monday 29th November
Music and History Cruise on the Lady Nelson	1:40 for 2-4pm	An afternoon sail on the Derwent river on the magnificent tall ship, the Lady Nelson, with refreshments, live music, singing and history. Regency, formal or nautical attire admired but not required. See if you can outdress the crew, but be warned – some of them may be pirates. Sinn Araon will provide beautiful Irish music and some sea shanties and other nautical songs for you to join in with if you so desire. Steampunk Ball 2020

Set the dodgy controls of your favourite time travelling vehicle and whirl your way back in time to the Victorian era, but with a difference.

Destination: St James Hall, 462 Elizabeth St, Hobart (off Rupert Ave, opposite Blue Gum, enter behind church)
Date and time: Saturday, 31st October 2020 (or should that be 1870?), 7:15 for 7:30-11:30pm.
What: Steampunk Ball

Fun and lively period dances with simply thrilling music by the Black Swans of Trespass.
Dancing master: David “Oddsocks” Wanless

Tea duelling under the masterful direction of our Tiffin Master.
Hat and glove elimination cotillon. Bring hat or gloves to participate.

You are most definitely encouraged to dress in your finest steampunk, Victoriana or formal attire. Dress to impress. (For ideas, search the web for make steampunk outfit, dress like a Victorian or make victorian outfit, or look at the event page below. You can do a lot with opp shop clothes and trinkets.)

All dances taught. No dancing experience or partner required. All ages welcome.
Please bring a plate of supper.

If you’d like to learn or practice the Chess Dance, come along to Danceoholics Unanimous, after our Buttongrass Ball on Friday, 9th October, at the same venue (St James Hall). From about 10:30pm we will all take on the roles of chess pieces on our giant chess board. All being well, we’ll be doing the dance during the evening at the ball.

From the USA via the National Folk Festival, for the first time in Australia, the Roguery trio is composed of three highly versatile veteran musicians who have come together to enchant dancers and listeners alike. Their arrangements range from strictly traditional to soaring flights of imagination and improvisation. They have recorded 6 CDs, and have become favourites at events throughout the USA and England. The band’s varied influences include English, contra, early music, classical, Breton, Scottish, Irish, Cape Breton, Galician, French, Balkan, jazz-fusion, Greek, and a variety of song traditions. The Roguery trio are: Dave Bartley, Shira Kammen and Jim Oakden

Dave Bartley (Seattle) plays mandolin, guitar, cittern, and numerous other plucked string instruments. He can provide a quiet foundation, inject a fiery driving rhythm, or pull wicked licks out of thin air. His odyssey from flashy rock guitarist to classical musician to eclectic sideman to tunesmith filters through his fingers, making you wonder what he’ll do next, playing the tune, then playing around, inside, and beyond it.

Shira Kammen (Berkeley), a multi-instrumentalist (primarily violin and vielle) and vocalist, has spent most of her life exploring early and traditional music. She is one of a rare class of musicians that elevate the musicianship of those around her with her astonishing virtuosity and imagination. A favorite at dance and music camps and a member of many bands and ensembles, she is constantly performing and teaching nationally and internationally with the elite of the music world. She has appeared on 60-ish recordings in a variety of styles of music, and is considered a demi-goddess in early music circles.

Jim Oakden (Santa Cruz) started playing piano and clarinet at an early age and stumbled into early music from the classical music scene, from whence he discovered the world of traditional and ethnic music. Having diverse tastes (or a short attention span), he performs on an absurd number of instruments, from accordion to zurna (to name a few).

Together, their arrangements range from strictly traditional to soaring flights of imagination and improvisation. They have recorded 6 CDs, and have become favourites at events throughout the USA and England. Beyond Boom Chuck: Accompaniment	10:00 – 11:30	Dave Bartley	Expanding the kinds of backup done by rhythm players, for dances and other settings. It is difficult to count the number of bands of which Dave Bartley is a member. He plays mandolin, guitar, cittern, and numerous other plucked string instruments. He can provide a quiet foundation, inject a fiery driving rhythm, or pull wicked licks out of thin air
Galician and Breton music	10:00 – 11:30	Jim Oakden	Learn some wonderful tunes from Celtic Spain and France with some cultural background, including some commentary on playing them for dances. Jim is a master multi-instrumentalist.
Popular Music of the English Renaissance	12:00 – 1:30	Shira Kammen	Explore the wit, humour and melancholy of the High Renaissance in England. We’ll look at dance melodies, ballads, madrigals, rounds, drinking, love, and newsworthy songs from a number of different sources: ‘Pills to Purge Melancholy’, Ravenscroft, Playford, Shakespeare’s plays, among others.
The Broad Church of Contra Music	12:00 – 1:30	Dave Bartley	To its Celtic base, modern contra dance music adds inspiration from all sorts of genres – Quebecois, Cape Breton, rock and roll, jazz, techno and even TV theme songs and symphonic music. Dave Bartley has written hundreds of tunes and played with numerous bands in various genres. He’ll use this workshop as an excuse to indulge in an eclectic menu of tunes and influences. All musicians welcome, with no intent to play for dances required.
Not Everything in 3 is a Waltz	12:00 – 1:30	Jim Oakden	Explore the mysterious world of mazurkas, hambos, bourees and more. Jim started playing piano and clarinet at an early age and stumbled into early music from the classical music scene, from whence he discovered the world of traditional and ethnic music. Having diverse tastes (or a short attention span), he performs on an absurd number of instruments, from accordion to zurna (to name a few). A dancer himself, he specialises in playing for dancers in a bunch of bands and genres. This workshop is best for music readers.

Enjoy a variety of fun, accessible English country dances while we play with global/positional terminology — a great way to build community and learn (and dance) the whole dance. Dance Here Now	12:00 – 1:30	Brooke Friendly and Deanna Devers	Dance, laugh, and experiment as we focus on dancing rather than dances. Build learning, helping, and partnering skills. Be ready to accept mistakes as an opportunity to get better at recovering. Dance more, worry less. No dancing experience or partner required.
Rogue’s Farewell	3:00 – 5:00	Brooke Friendly and Roguery	A final chance to dance to the raucous to sublime music of Roguery, featuring the English / American connection – exploring the blurred area between what is defined as English Country Dance and Contra (American) dance (and a little dash of Scottish) — figures and styling that have crossed genres. No dancing experience or partner required.

Our caller, Brooke Friendly (USA) is known for her warm yet commanding personality, her clear and concise teaching, her creativity, her sense of humour and whimsy, and her attention to community. Brooke teaches throughout North America and England. A dance choreographer, she and Chris Sackett are publishing their sixth book of dances (Impropriety 6). See Brooke Friendly.

All Saturday dances will be held in the magnificent Hobart Town Hall, 50 Macquarie St, Hobart. All Sunday dances and dance workshops will be held at the Lenah Valley Community Hall, Creek Rd, Lenah Valley. Christina will be present with a display of bonnets and available to talk about the project.

The game of Graces and other Regency outdoor games – available to play any time, with guidance provided by Masters Liam and Lachlan. Special sessions: Graces or Quoits, on the hour; Skittles or Boules at half past the hour, 10:30-3:30. The game of Graces is a Regency outdoor game for two or more people, designed to teach people gracefulness, however it is great fun whatever one’s level of dexterity.

Indoor games – with the friends you brought, or make some new ones (cards, backgammon, chess, draughts)

Maypole dancing for all – weave a creative pattern around the pole to the lively music of Fiddle and Squeeze, who will help you avoid getting tangled and have fun, 12:30, 1:30, 3pm

Birthday cake: 1:50pm. Celebrate Glen Derwent’s 200th birthday

Regency dance for all: 2-3pm. No partner or dancing experience required. Wonderful live period music by Van Diemen’s Angels.

Connoisseur’s Regency dance workshop: 11-12:30. Onlookers welcome. With Dancing Master Dr John Gardiner-Garden and wonderful live period music by Van Diemen’s Angels. For those with some dancing experience or an adventurous spirit. Some slightly more complicated dances, including a reprise of some from the ball the night before and some new adventures. From 1803, comes the lively dance Elegance and Simplicity. If fortune favours us we may then enjoy the Downfall of Paris and Allemande Suisse or even, if the numbers suit, the glorious Meditation Chinois.

All-day delicious period sweet and savoury food and hot and cold drinks

Set the dodgy controls of your favourite time travelling vehicle and whirl your way back in time to the Victorian era, but with a difference.

Destination: Wesley Hall, 58 Melville St, Hobart
Date and time: Saturday, 27th October 2018 (or should that be 1868?), 7:30pm
What: Steampunk Ball

Fun and lively period dances with simply thrilling music by the Black Swans of Trespass.
Dancing master: David “Oddsocks” Wanless

Tea duelling under the masterful direction of our Tiffenmaster, Sir Nicholas Hewenn.
Hat and glove elimination cotillon. Bring hat or gloves to participate.

You are most definitely encouraged to dress in your finest steampunk, Victoriana or formal attire. Dress to impress. (For ideas, search the web for make steampunk outfit, dress like a victorian or make victorian outfit, or look at the event page below. You can do a lot with opp shop clothes and trinkets.)

Time travel can be a little disorienting. If you’d like to get your bearings before arriving at the Steampunk Ball, arrive a few hours early and get some hints about blending in with the locals on the dance floor.

Optional dance workshop, 2-4pm, Wesley Hall, $8. Feel free to attend just the ball, but if you’d like to learn or brush up on some dances, or just want another two hours of dancing, come to the workshop.

Also, we will be practising the Chess Dance, where we all take on the roles of chess pieces on our giant chess board. All being well, we’ll be doing the dance during the evening at the ball.
